Depression

Depression is a condition that occurs when a person feels hopeless, depressed, or uninterested in life. It usually goes away after a while, but it can still affect a person’s daily activities. It can affect a person’s ability to take care of their family, work, and school. Depression can also affect their social life.

Major depression can also cause various physical and behavioral symptoms to appear in different ways. Some of these include changes in appetite, concentration, and sleep. It can also trigger thoughts of suicide. According to experts, depression can be caused by various factors, such as genetics, environmental factors, and psychological disorders. It can usually start in adulthood.

Why do I need to see a psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist can diagnose and prescribe medication to treat depression issues. Usually, a psychologist will refer patients to a psychiatrist if they think they need more help managing their condition.

Although depression is a common response to the trials of life, it can be difficult to control for people with this condition. Dr. Wilma Kruger-Steyn can help you develop a treatment plan that fits to your needs. Aside from medication, she can also help you manage your anxiety by talking about your goals and lifestyle.

If you’re considering taking medication for your depression, avoid doing so as it can trigger the feelings of depression. Also, avoid alcohol and drugs since they can also trigger the depression.

Risk factors for depression include:

  • Personal or family history of depression.
  • Significant life changes, trauma, or stress.
  • Certain physical illnesses and medications.

Aside from these, other factors such as stress can also trigger mood disorders. Although people can feel sad at times, mood disorders are more difficult to manage. They can also be triggered by life’s problems. For instance, losing a job or a close relative can trigger depression.
